Add Text Areas

A text area creates a container that wraps text as you type. The text area you create outside a shape maintains the same position regardless of other shapes around it.

Task

Procedure

Create text

  1. Click the text_tool.bmp tool on the Toolbox toolbar.

  2. Put your cursor in the diagram where you want text, click the mouse button, and start typing. When done, click outside the text or press the Esc key.

If you want a text area of a certain size, click the text_tool00012.bmp tool, move your cursor to the diagram, click and drag the Text tool I-beam cursor on the diagram from the top-left to lower-right corner of the desired area, and then type the text. Click outside the text or press the Esc key to finish.

Change default text alignment

Select the text and, on the Format menu, choose Text Alignment.

Attach a text area to a shape

Attaching a text area to a shape keeps it at a specific distance away, and if the shape or line is moved, the attached object moves with it. To attach a text area to a shape:

  1. Create a text area.

  2. Click and hold the left mouse button on the red box (callout or attachment point) inside the selected text area.

  3. Drag the callout line to the shape you wish to call out (attach) it to.

  4. Release the mouse button.

Graphics that are imported or pasted from other applications can also be anchored to shapes using the above procedure.

To make the callout line visible, from the Format menu, choose Callout Line, and choose a color other than ‘None’.

If you want to see or hide all callout lines and other borders that are currently hidden, on the View menu, choose Hidden Lines command to hide or display the called out text.

Detach a text area

Right-click the text block and choose Detach Text from Shape or Detach Text from Line.

Display a gray dashed border around a text area

On the View menu, choose Hidden Lines.

Change the text area border, color, line style, or width

Click the text area and, on the Format menu, choose Line and Border.

Change the text area fill pattern

Click the text area and, on the Format menu, choose Fill.
