Data Types in Sheets

You can format a sheet’s cells as a variety of different data types. Some examples are Number, Text, and Date. These formats specify the kind of data that you can enter in the cell and also how it displays.

To format cells with a specific data type:

  1. Right-click the cell and choose Format Cells.

  2. In the Cell Formatting dialog box, click the Cell tab.

  3. Choose a Data Type from the drop-down list and specify any changes to default format settings.

  4. Click OK.

List Data

The List data type can create custom non-numeric data elements in a sheet.

  1. Right-click the cell and choose Format Cells.

  2. In the Cell Formatting dialog box, click the Cell tab.

  3. Choose List from the Data Type drop-down list.

  4. Click the browsebutton.bmp button to open the Define List dialog box.

  5. Click the Add button to create new list values.

  6. Select the Multiple Values check box if you want to permit users to choose more than one list value on the same cell.

  7. Click OK.
