Add Swimlanes and Child Swimlanes

Whether you add swimlanes or floating swimlanes depends on either the type of diagram you are using or whether you have specified to use one or the other in the Format Diagram dialog box, Process tab.

Swimlanes nested within a parent swimlane create a hierarchy of swimlane levels. In any diagram that uses swimlanes, you can change the view of swimlane levels. On the View menu, point to Swimlanes and choose a view. Parent swimlanes cannot contain shapes.

You can hide one or more swimlane levels in a nested swimlane. On the View menu, point to Swimlanes and choose Hide One Swimlane Level, Show One Swimlane Level, or Show All Swimlane Levels.

Task

Procedure

Add a swimlane or floating swimlane

  1. On the Insert menu, choose Swimlane.

  2. In the Insert Swimlane dialog box, type a new name or choose one from the drop-down list.

  3. If you are using an enterprise resource, the drop-down list may contain global swimlanes from the repository, indicated by a global global.bmp icon.

  4. Select the location of the new swimlane.

  5. If you choose an option other than Top-Level, you also need to specify where it is placed relative to another swimlane in the diagram.

  6. Click OK to finish.

Note: If you are using a repository, you may also right-click on an organization type resource in the repository tree, and choose Add As Swimlane To Diagram. This will automatically add the swimlane, with the appropriate hierarchy (parent/child swimlanes) to the diagram.

Add a child swimlane

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 for adding a swimlane (above).

  2. In the Insert Swimlane dialog box, select Child Of from from the Location drop-down list, then select the name of the parent swimlane in the resulting additional drop-down list.

  3. Click OK.
