Import Data

You can import data into an iGrafx document from various sources.

Visio File Import

When you import a Visio file into iGrafx, each Visio page is converted into an iGrafx diagram or collection of diagrams.

  1. On the File menu, choose Open.

  2. Select a Visio file to import.

  3. Click the Options button to specify Visio file import settings.

  4. In the Visio Import Options dialog box, choose to import as separate diagrams or keep tiled pages on a single diagram when possible. These options allow you to put Visio pages together in one iGrafx diagram or keep them separate, depending on your process diagramming needs.

iGrafx converts a cross-functional flowchart in Visio to a process diagram, identifies decision shapes, adds default Yes or No decision cases to the imported shape in the iGrafx diagram, and adds the decision cases to the shape in the Shape Library. A Visio file that does not use functional bands imports as an iGrafx basic diagram, which you can then convert to another diagram type.

Visio groups can be converted into iGrafx as groups or as one shape. If any of the Visio sub-shapes have text or their own custom properties, the group is imported as an iGrafx group. Otherwise, the sub-shapes are combined and converted into a single shape.

iGrafx tries to identify decision shapes and add decision cases to the imported shape in the diagram and the Shape Library. It is recommended that you check decision shapes for proper behavior after importing from Visio to iGrafx.

Database File Import

  1. On the File menu, point to New and choose a new diagram from a template; e.g. Cross-Functional Process from the Process category.

  2. On the Toolbox toolbar, double-click the Activity shape, and place several instances of the shape in the diagram.

  3. On the Tools menu, choose Import Database Data and use the wizard.

On the Map Database Columns to Shape Properties wizard page, custom data properties defined for a shape are listed by name.

You can import database files from several different sources into iGrafx. Your diagram should already contain shapes for mapping. The Map Database Columns to Shape Properties wizard page helps you map specific shape properties in your diagram, including custom data, to the information contained in the database file.
