Built-In and Custom Templates

iGrafx application files can be defined as iGrafx template (*.igt) files, which can be the basis for new documents.

When you save a file as a template, it is saved in the Personal Templates directory if you choose Yes at the prompt.

To see paths to Personal Templates, on the Tools menu, choose Options and click the Files tab in the resulting Options dialog box.

Task

Procedure

Create (override) a built-in template

  1. Create a new iGrafx document that contains a desired diagram type (for example, Process, BPMN, Lean VSM, and so on). Include the tools, shapes, lines, swimlanes, or any other feature you use often.

  2. On the File menu, choose Save As.

  3. In the Save As dialog box, type the appropriate built-in template file name. See Built-In Templates Reference.

  4. Select iGrafx Template (*.igt) as the file type.

  5. Click the Save button.

  6. Choose Yes to save the template in your Personal Templates directory, thus overriding the built-in template.

Create a Personal (custom) template available from the File New dialog box

  1. Create a new iGrafx document that contains a desired diagram type (for example, basic, process, BPMN, Lean, and so on). Include the tools, shapes, lines, swimlanes, or any other feature you use often.

  2. On the File menu, choose Save As.

  3. In the Save As dialog box, type a desired document name to appear in the menu.

  4. Select iGrafx Template (*.igt) as the file type.

  5. Choose Yes at the prompt.

  6. On the File menu, point to New, and click the Personal Templates category to choose your custom template.

Normally, the document name appears in the New (file) dialog box when you create a custom template as explained above. However, you can override its name with a more appropriate name of your choosing. On the File menu, choose File Properties, add a title on the Summary page of the Document Properties dialog box, and save the .igt file. The name that appears here also appears in the New (file) dialog box. In addition, if you place a .png file in the same location, with the same name as the .igt file, that image will be used to represent the template.

Move or copy an existing Template file to a standard template location

  1. On the Tools menu, choose Options.

  2. Click the Files tab.

  3. Under File Types, select the desired default template location, such as Personal Templates, then click the Modify button to note the path to the template.

  4. Use Windows Explorer to move or copy the template to the desired template location.

Create a diagram using a custom template

On the File menu, point to New, choose the template from Personal Templates, and click Create; or, click the Browse button to navigate to where you stored the template.

Set page setup (print) options for a custom template

  1. Open the custom template file.

  2. On the File menu, choose Page Setup.

  3. Specify settings in the resulting Page Setup dialog box.
