Links to Other Diagrams, Files, Web Pages, or Repositories

The following procedures use the context menu and the Links page of the Properties dialog box. You can also find the Add Link dialog box on the Insert menu (Link command).

Procedure

Link a shape to other shapes or diagrams

Note: If you want to create a subprocess (hierarchical decomposition), please see the Manage Process Diagrams or the BPMN Flows, Processes, and Behaviors topic on creating subprocesses.

  1. In the source diagram, right-click the shape you would like to link from and choose Properties.

  2. On the Links page in the Properties dialog box, click New.

  3. In the Add Link dialog box, click Diagram in the Link to section and select a diagram from the drop-down list or enter a name for your new diagram.

  4. If you are linking to a specific shape in the other diagram, select the Link to Shape check box and click browsebutton00002.bmp, then select a shape in the Pick Diagram Object dialog box and click OK.

  5. Select a key modifier by pressing Shift, Ctrl, or Alt key. You may also enter a description.

  6. Click OK, to save and close the Add Link dialog box. If you entered a name for a new diagram, click Yes to the prompt.

  7. If you want the linked-to diagram to be a subprocess (e.g. to get a subprocess indicator), choose it from the Subprocess drop-down menu in the Properties of the shape you linked from.

  8. Click Apply or OK, or click on another object to auto-save your changes.

After you finish setting up the link, right-click on the shape and choose your link to display the linked-to object.

Link to a file or web page

  1. In the source diagram, right-click the shape you would like to link from and choose Properties.

  2. On the Links page in the Properties dialog box, click New.

  3. In the Add Link dialog box, click File or Web Page in the Link to section.

  4. Enter a path to a file or URL using one of these methods:

  • Type or paste the path in the Path or URL text box.

  • Click the link_openfilebutton.bmp button and browse to the file.

  • Click the link_openwebrowserbutton.bmp button and browse to the URL.

Note: The path you enter can be to any file or URL, such as Intranet or Internet websites, SharePoint repositories, or file shares on your network. To link to an iGrafx repository item, please see the procedure below.

Link to a diagram within another file

  1. Follow steps to link to a file or web page above.

  2. In Link to Diagram, enter a diagram name or choose one from the drop-down list. If you leave this field blank, the link targets the document instead of a specific diagram within it.

Link to a location (e.g. bookmark) within a file

To use this feature with a PDF file, you must have Acrobat Reader 7 or later.

  1. Find and note the name of the bookmark (in Word or HTML), named range (in Excel), slide number (in PowerPoint) or page (in PDF) in the document where you want to link.

  2. Follow steps to link to a file or web page above.

  3. In the Bookmark field, type the name of the bookmark or named range within the target file where you are linking from the shape. If you are linking to a *.pdf file, enter the page number where you want the link to navigate in the file.

  4. Double-click the linked shape in the diagram to try the new link.

Link to a repository file

  1. In the iGrafx Explorer Bar, click the Repositories tab, and click a repository.

  2. In the diagram, right-click the shape that you want to link from and choose Properties.

  3. On the Links page in the Properties dialog box, click New.

  4. In the Add Link dialog box, click repository link in the Link to section and click a file.

Follow (navigate) a link from source to destination

Right-click the shape and choose the link.

or

Hold down the key modifier, if any, and then double-click the shape.

Edit a link

  1. Right-click the shape and choose Properties.

  2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Links page and select the link you want to edit.

  3. Click the Edit button.

  4. Under Link to Diagram, choose the diagram to which you want to link.
